NBT EAC Speaking To Scouts

This fall the New Britain Township Environmental Advisory Council (“EAC”) was invited by Cub Scout Pack 133 Leader Shannon Fredebaugh-Siller to visit and guide the Pack and members of Scout Troop 169 in their native seed planting project known as winter sowing.

The EAC brought the seeds of various plants important to our pollinators and the Scouts brought the soil, the translucent milk jugs that would serve as mini-greenhouses and the enthusiasm to work at improving our local environment.  After a short discussion about keystone plant species and pollinators that need our help, they got to work!  What fun!

Moving through the stations of cutting jugs, filling them with soil, choosing and planting seeds and then labeling the jugs, the Scouts had their mini-greenhouses ready to go home with them.  At home, they were to place them outside in a sheltered location until Spring, when the seeds germinate as conditions warm.

The Scouts and the EAC will team up again this Spring for a planting at Peace Valley Nature Center or at our Native Plant garden at the NBT building at North Branch Park.

It was a pleasure to work with such an engaged group of children, parents and leaders who are actively working toward a healthier environment and better future right here in New Britain Township.

Thank you,

             NBT Environmental Advisory Council.
