On November 11, 2009, New Britain Township dedicated a Veterans Monument at North Branch Park. The dedication was the kickoff to the greater fundraising campaign to construct the new Veterans Park, and will continue to serve as the principal gathering are for Veterans Day and the 4th of July ceremony.
The New Britain Township Veterans Committee has designed a park to honor all veterans who have served and are presently serving in the Armed Forces, which has been named Veterans Park. The park is located on approximately 61 acres of land at New Galena Road and Walters Road. The land is owned by Bucks County and leased to New Britain Township for parkland and agricultural uses.
At their Regular Meeting of July 27, 2016, bids were opened by New Britain Township for construction of Phase One of Veterans Park, located at New Galena and Walters Roads in New Britain Township. The Board of Supervisors awarded the construction bid to Blooming Glen Contractors, Inc. for $298,118.88. Total estimated Project cost is $375,200.00. Construction of Phase One began August 16 and should be completed by the end of October 2016.
Over the last several years, New Britain Township’s Veterans Committee has been working on a park design for the facility, which will honor all Veterans who served or are presently serving in the United States Armed Forces. Park will include an ADA-accessible walking trail, a gazebo, a memorial monument and flag pole, a small tot lot play structure, parking lot and other elements where veterans and their families can join together to honor those who have served in the past, as well as those on active duty today. The overall design will incorporate natural habitats and will preserve the active farming that is presently performed on the land.
The Veterans Committee has worked with Township Engineers Gilmore and Associates to create a passive park design that will provide a “peaceful air of contemplation” while maintaining the existing agricultural uses. The Phase One design accomplishes these goals.
In March 2016, the Township was awarded a Bucks County Municipal Open Space Grant for $195,058.00 for the construction of Veterans Park Phase One. The Veterans Committee has been working diligently over the last eight years to raise money toward this project through the sale of memorial bricks, the Annual Fall Festival and various other fundraising events. Their hard work has raised approximately $72,000 toward the construction of Phase One. The remaining funds will be taken from several reserve pools of money that have been set aside over time to go toward recreational projects.
Phase Two of Veterans Park has yet to be designed, and is slated for construction once funding for the project is in place.
The Veterans Committee consists of New Britain Township residents, local veterans, members of the local business alliances, and Township representatives. The committee meets on the first Wednesday of every other month at 6:00 PM at the township building.
